Join us for a meditative Monday workshop at the Old Waiting Room to explore the processes of making and memory. Artists Barbara Majek and Tyreis Holder will guide an experimental textiles session for young people aged 18-25. Music and light refreshments provided.

About Memories For the Future 

Memories for the Future is a hyperlocal community-led programme that researches and responds to the intangible heritage of the people who shaped Peckham’s iconic Rye Lane.

Our starting point are Rye Lane’s iconic “Aunties”, women business leaders whose roles in Peckham exemplify the lived realities of migration into Britain and the experience of rebuilding lives as part of a diaspora.

Memories for the Future works to cherish and learn from the at risk histories of our community, exemplifying Britain’s complex relationships with the rest of the world and the foundational influence of women on the communities living/working on Rye Lane.

Barbara Majek

Majek is a multi-disciplinary artist and researcher who experiments with the complexities of her bicultural identity.

Tyreis Holder

Tyreis Holder, a South London artist with Jamaican/St. Vincent heritage, explores self, identity, and colonial spaces through installation, textiles, poetry, and more. Her work, embracing textiles as healing language, addresses trauma among Black women. She sparks conversations on race, disability, community, class, sexuality, and culture through lived experiences.

Tyreis Holder, Supported Love Reaches All

In collaboration with the South London Refugee Association, artist, poet, and visual storyteller Tyreis Holder facilitated workshops with young people to co-create a vibrant and healing new artwork now available to enjoy at Rye Lane Market.

Working with the Peckham Platform Learning team and in collaboration with Barbara Majek, participants meet via Zoom to develop new skills, create collaborative work and receive support for individual development.

Rye Lane Reconnected

Rye Lane Reconnected, a community-led initiative, collaborates with social artists, residents, and community groups to commission artworks for Peckham's Rye Lane. Young people from Southwark's Youth Justice Service, South London Refugee Association, and Inspire Walworth, alongside artists like Koby Martin and Tyreis Holder, explore community, heritage, and identity, reclaiming public spaces. Generously funded by Arts Council England, Art Fund, and others.
