Ana Laura López de la Torre is an artist and writer based in Uruguay. Using the overlooked and the underrated as a starting point, her work creates visible and unexpected connections between things, people and places.
Her practice often brings together different groups of people with common interests but conflicting agendas. She works collaboratively with other artists, community organisations and people from all walks of life. In this way she explores ‘the local’ as a critical context for artistic production.
In 2010 Peckham Platform (then known as Peckham Space) celebrated the opening of a new venue with Commission 6, an exhibition of artworks about Peckham made by established artists in collaboration with local people. López de la Torre was commissioned to work with Harris Academy Peckham on a project addressing the theme of neighbours. The resulting film The Interior of the School is also my Exterior takes us on a filmic tour of the local secondary school, by the hand of students and teachers. It was shown privately to invited audiences.
As part of her commission, López de la Torre invited neighbouring organisations to put on talks, screenings, walks and performances in and around Peckham Square. Commission 6 ran from 12 June – 30 July 2010.
Her work was also part of the 2016 Peckham Platform Retrospective exhibition, a timeline of all 20 artists commissions realised by Peckham Platform between 2010 – 2016.
López de la Torre has also worked with the ICA, the Whitechapel Art Gallery, Arts & Business, Gasworks, La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Independent Photography, Tate Modern, Tate Britain and the South London Gallery.
